Electronic signature or digital signature?
These are different things, and the words get used interchangeably in a way that causes real problems. An electronic signature is a picture of your signature placed on the page — visually identical to signing with a pen and scanning, and legally valid for the overwhelming majority of documents. A digital signature is a cryptographic certificate bound to the file, proving who signed it and detecting any change made afterwards.
For a rental agreement, a consent form, an invoice, an NDA or an offer letter, an electronic signature is what everyone means and what everyone accepts. A certificate is required only when the recipient explicitly asks for one: some government filings, some regulated finance and health processes, and qualified signature schemes in the EU.
Getting a signature that does not look pasted on
The giveaway is almost always the background. A signature photographed on white paper carries a grey rectangle that shows against the page, and it reads as fake immediately. Draw it directly instead — with a trackpad, a mouse, or a finger on a phone screen, which gives the most natural line of the three.
If you must use a photo of a real signature, shoot it on plain white paper in daylight with no shadow across the page, then remove the background before placing it. Size it against the surrounding text: roughly twice the height of the body text looks right, and one spanning half the page does not.
Signing correctly
Place the signature on the line rather than floating above it, and add the date in the format the document uses. If there is an initials box on each page, initial every one — a contract missing initials on page 3 gets bounced back as often as one missing a signature.
Once exported, the signature is flattened into the page. It cannot be dragged off, and it survives printing, forwarding and re-saving in another application.
Why signing locally is the point
Every step runs inside your browser, using the WebAssembly and Canvas APIs your device already ships with. No file is uploaded, no copy is kept, and nothing sits in a queue on a server waiting to be deleted — which is also why the tool keeps working with the network disconnected.
Your signature is a biometric identifier, and the documents you attach it to are the ones that matter. Most online signing services store both the signature image and the signed document on their servers indefinitely. Here neither the contract nor the signature leaves your device, and nothing is retained after you close the tab.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a legally certified digital signature?
Both are available. A drawn or typed signature is an electronic signature, fine for everyday agreements. Sign digitally adds a certificate-based (PKCS#7) signature from your own .p12 file that any reader can verify.
Can I sign on multiple pages?
Yes. Once drawn, your signature can be placed on as many pages and positions as the document requires, and initials work the same way.
Is my signature stored anywhere?
No. The signature is created and applied entirely in your browser and is discarded when you leave the page.
Is a signature added this way legally binding?
In most jurisdictions, yes, for most documents — eIDAS in the EU and the ESIGN Act in the US both recognise electronic signatures. What matters legally is intent and consent, not the technology. A small set of documents (wills, some property deeds, certain court filings) still require wet ink or a qualified certificate; check the specific requirement if yours is one of those.
Can I reuse the same signature on other documents?
Yes. Draw it once and download the transparent PNG, then place that image on any future document. That also keeps your signature consistent, which is worth more than it sounds when someone compares two of your documents.
How do I make my signature background transparent?
Draw it in the tool rather than photographing it — the result is transparent by construction. A photograph always carries paper colour with it and needs background removal first.
Can someone remove my signature after I sign?
Not by dragging it off — it is flattened into the page on export. A determined person with editing software can alter any visual signature, on paper or on screen. If you need tamper-evidence that can be proven, that is what a digital certificate is for.
Can several people sign the same document?
Yes. Sign, download, and pass the signed file to the next person to sign in turn. Each signature is added on top of the previous ones and none of them overwrite each other.
