Two jobs: filling a form, and making one fillable

Check marks and crosses go into tick boxes, and the same page can hold as many entries as it needs.

Zoom in for precise placement on dense forms, and keep the font size consistent across answers so the finished document looks typed rather than pasted. When the form is done, use the Sign PDF tool if a signature is required, and the Protect PDF tool if it should be locked before sending.

Creating fields, and when to flatten them

Adding a text field or a checkbox creates a real form field in the PDF — an AcroForm element that Adobe Reader, Preview, Chrome, Edge and most other viewers recognise as fillable. Each field gets a unique name automatically. Position them over the blanks in your layout, size them to the space available, and save the form.

The Flatten form fields option does the opposite: it bakes every field's current content into the page as static text and graphics. Use it on a completed form that should not be edited further — a signed application, a submitted declaration — or when the recipient's system cannot handle interactive fields. Leave it off when you are distributing a blank form for others to fill.
