How to use Split PDF

  1. Select the PDF you want to split.

  2. Choose page ranges (for example 1-3, 5, 8-10) or select "Split every page".

  3. Click Split PDF.

  4. Download a single PDF, or a ZIP when the split produces several files.

Splitting, extracting and deleting are three different jobs

People say "split" to mean any of three things, and picking the right one saves a lot of clean-up. Splitting cuts one document into several at boundaries you choose. Extracting pulls a selection of pages into a new file and leaves the original alone. Deleting removes pages and keeps everything else.

If you want pages 5 to 9 as a standalone file, that is extraction. If you want a 200-page statement broken into twelve monthly files, that is splitting. If you want the blank scanner pages gone, that is deletion.

How to choose the split points

Look for the natural boundary in the document rather than counting pages. Statements break at each period's header page, reports at each chapter opener, scanned batches wherever the separator sheet landed. Splitting on structure survives the day someone inserts a page; splitting on a memorised page number does not.

For documents you split repeatedly on the same rhythm — a monthly report, a set of certificates, a batch of double-sided scans — split at a fixed interval instead. It is faster and it does not drift.

  • Split every N pages for uniform batches like double-sided scans or certificates.
  • Split at chosen pages when the boundaries are irregular.
  • Extract a range when you want one piece and want the original untouched.

What each output file contains

Each result is a complete, valid PDF: the pages you asked for, plus the fonts, colour profiles and images those pages actually use. Resources belonging only to pages that ended up elsewhere are dropped, which is why the parts frequently add up to less than the whole.

Bookmarks pointing into a part are kept and renumbered. Bookmarks pointing at pages that landed in a different file are removed rather than left dangling, so nothing in your split files links into nowhere.

Working with big documents

Every step runs inside your browser, using the WebAssembly and Canvas APIs your device already ships with. No file is uploaded, no copy is kept, and nothing sits in a queue on a server waiting to be deleted — which is also why the tool keeps working with the network disconnected.

Because the work happens on your own hardware, the practical ceiling is your device's memory rather than an upload quota. A 500-page document splits comfortably on a laptop. On a phone with a very large scan, close other tabs first — the browser will otherwise reclaim memory mid-operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I write page ranges?

Use commas to separate ranges and hyphens for spans. For example, 1-3, 5, 8-10 produces one PDF with pages 1 to 3, one with page 5 and one with pages 8 to 10.

Can I split every page into its own file?

Yes. Choose "Split every page" and each page becomes a separate PDF, delivered together in a ZIP file.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. Splitting happens locally in your browser and the file never leaves your device.

How do I split a PDF into individual pages?

Choose the split-every-1-page option. You get one PDF per page, delivered as a ZIP so a 40-page document does not become 40 separate downloads.

Does splitting change the original file?

Never. The file on your device is read, not written to. Every result is a new document, so you can split the same source as many different ways as you like.

Can I split a scanned PDF?

Yes. A scan is a PDF whose pages happen to be images, and pages split the same way regardless of what is on them. The images are copied at their original resolution, so nothing gets softer.

What happens to bookmarks and links when I split?

Bookmarks pointing inside a part are kept and renumbered to its new page positions. Bookmarks pointing at pages in a different part are dropped instead of left broken.

Is there a page limit?

No fixed limit. The split runs on your device, so the ceiling is available memory — several hundred pages is routine on a desktop or laptop.
